The Truth About Concussion Recovery (That No One Told Me)

When I first started healing from my concussion, I thought it would be a straight line. Rest, eat well, do the “right things” — and slowly but surely, I’d feel better.

But that’s not what happened.

The Reality of the Ups and Downs

Some days, I felt hopeful. I had a bit more energy. I might go for a drive, pick up some groceries, or laugh with someone on the phone — and I’d think, “Okay. This is it. I’m finally turning a corner.”

Then the next day, I’d wake up with my brain full of fog and my body moving like molasses. The tiniest noise made me flinch. A short walk left me dizzy and exhausted. I’d cancel plans — again — and feel like I was back at square one.

That unpredictability? It was one of the hardest parts of post-concussion syndrome. The constant ups and downs. And no one had warned me about it.

Finding Hope in the Low Days

But over time, I started to notice something in my concussion recovery:

Even though those low days felt like they’d never end…They always did.

That became my lifeline:

“Bad days don’t last forever. Better ones are around the corner.”

Sometimes I didn’t believe it. But I kept saying it anyway.

Small Things That Made a Big Difference

On the hard days, I learned to lean on small things that gave me even a flicker of light:

  • Sitting outside and letting the wind touch my face — even for just 5 minutes

  • Talking to someone who didn’t try to fix me, just listened

  • Writing in a journal — and re-reading old pages to remind myself how far I’d come

  • Moving gently, even just to the end of the street

  • Resting without guilt, without needing to “earn” it

  • Connecting with others who truly understood post-concussion fatigue, sensory overload, or the emotional toll

  • Making something nourishing — like a smoothie — when cooking a full meal felt like too much

These things didn’t “fix” everything. But they helped me feel human again. And that mattered more than I realized.

The Power of Not Doing It Alone

The biggest shift in my concussion recovery? It came when I stopped trying to heal alone.

That’s why I’m so grateful you’re here. Part of this community. We learn from each other. We support each other. We remind each other that healing from a concussion is not linear — but it is possible.
